Is the installation of SP1 for W/XP required before sP2
can be installed?

Andrew,

Service packs should be on order. Example Service 1 to Service 2. Each
service pack fixes problems of previous ones. But you can give it a shot and
see what happens. I suggest you back up your system first before doing this
to some other media. Let me know how it goes!

No you don't need SP1 if you are going to install SP2....it contains all
security updates and patches from day 1.

Andrew;
SP-2 is cumulative and includes the earlier critical Updates
If SP-1 is not installed, there is no need to install SP-1 before
installing SP-2.
I would suggest installing SP-2 directly.
