Just downloading it wouldn't cause a problem because nothing is changed.
Unless, you are low on space. What kind of problems are you having?

Look for a WUTemp folder on the C:\ or C:\Windows . It is hidden. Check
that folder and see if you see anything. If you do, then just delete the
contents. This is where Windows update store downloaded files and then
installs from this directory.

But looking from another post, just downloading the updates does not
(should not) change anything since it has not been installed.

Also, check your auto update settings in control panel

did not think it should cause a problem, but couldnt think of anything else,i
am up to date with anti virus , spyware etc, on aol 9, windows xp, but just
recently , my screen freezes and aol becomes unresponsive, have to end with
task manager , or it signs me off then back on again, quickly, and also when
i sign off windows , the icons go but the desktop pic stays, have to force
shut down, saying that things ahve been ok the last day or two, i downloaded
latest drivers for my BT voyager 105 modem, and was going to install , but
dont know how to actually do this from zip file, dont even know if that would
make a difference, since it doesnt happen all the time. thank you for the
reply.

Hi

To reset the pending download you now have, clean out the Download
folder (WU5's temporary download folder) located here:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You can use the procedure described here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/showarticle.aspx?articleid=11&ln=en

You might need to delete the DataStore folder mentioned in the link
above, as well as the EventCache folder.

Note that a side effect of deleting the DataStore folder is that you
lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).
