View Full Version : cursor makes independent selections

Hi: I have two silly questions, but please help because
it is driving me nuts! Somewhere I missed the
instructions on how to control my cursor. My computer is
changing pages before I've even read what's on the
headings! I'm guessing my pointer has "hovered" too long
over an active link. Anyone know how to turn off the
automatic selection by hovering?
Second problem is that sometimes when I'm typing, for
instance, in a text box like this, I find that all of a
sudden my prior text has split open and now my typing is
entering the sentence from the inside. Can someone tell
me where I need to go to adjust these things?
Thanks so much,
Linda

Hi Linda -
To answer your first question, I recommend moving your mouse to a neutral
place while you are reading a page. Also avoid clicking or holding any
buttons or the mouse will cause the page to change.
You should also check your computer configuration to make sure that you have
it set properly. To do this:
1. Open My Computer (Double click the My Computer icon on the desktop)
2. On the top of the page, select the Tools menu item
3. Now select Folder Options... at the end of the menu
4. Under the General tab there is a box that says 'Click items as
follows'
a. Verify that the 'Double-click to open an item (single click to
select)' is selected.
To answer your second question, if you are typing and the typing is split
open this means that the cursor (blinky bar) has been moved. This can
happen if the mouse selects something or one of the arrow buttons on the
keyboard is selected. The arrow buttons come in two forms: the four arrows
near the shift key and the number pad on the right-hand side of the
keyboard. To change the number pad from arrows to numbers (and back) select
the 'Num Lock' key on the numbers pad.
Thanks for your post!
Karen

Are you working on a Laptop with a Touchpad mouse??? I find that I
often accidently tap the touchpad while typing and it has that effect.
