View Full Version : do not logon at startup

Since I upgraded messenger to 6.2 it has not recognised my preference, i.e.
:
Do NOT logon when windows starts.
It also signs me in automatically, while I would prefer to do it manually.
I finally just disabled messenger through the "administrative
tools->services", but I would rather not since I use it occasionally and
that is a hassle.
I tried dumping and reinstalling messenger but still have the same problem.
Any help?

Greetings Gerry,
The "Messenger" within Services has nothing to do with Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger, so
"disabling" that will do nothing.
To solve this, open up MSN Messenger, click the Tools menu, then Options, then General tab,
uncheck "Automatically run Messenger when I log on to Windows" and "Allow automatic sign in
when connected to the Internet" and click OK.

Hi Jonathan,
Now I'm more confused.
I do not have MSN Messenger installed so I can't turn off Windows Messenger
from there.
The only other program that I found had WinMess was Outlook Express and I
unchecked the appropriate box.
I just want to control when I logon and sign in to Windows Messenger and it
won't let me.

Hi Gerry,
You said that you were using "6.2" of Messenger -- the only version of Messenger that's ever
reached 6.2 is MSN Messenger, hence why I immediately answered with that.
Since you're using Windows Messenger (more than likely 4.7 if you care), you'll simply need
to disable that.
To do so, open it up (click Start, then Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK), click Tools,
Options, Preferences tab and uncheck 'Run this Program when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows
Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on version) as well as 'Allow this program to run
in the background' or 'Allow Windows Messenger to run in the background' (depending on
version). This won't remove Windows Messenger, so features like Remote Assistance, Whiteboard
and Application Sharing will continue to work, but it will let it stay out of your way.
Also, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Hi Jonathan,
Thank you. You mentioned a conflict between Norton Anti Virus and Windows
messenger.
I unchecked the box for instant messenger in NAV options and it seems to be
working:
i.e,
Win.Msgr. does not run when XP starts (it had been doing so even though I
unchecked that box in preferences).
Question: Can I open Windows Messenger without being automatically signed
in? Maybe I want to change some options before going online.
I am using (yes, I'm sure now) Windows Messenger 5.0
Thanx

Hi Gerry,
Yes you can by removing your saved Passport. To do so, click the Start Button, then click
the Control Panel. Then, click User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select the Windows XP
account name you're currently logged under, and then on the left side of the screen, under
Related Tasks, click 'Manage my Network Passwords'. In the window that opens, click the
Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry and click 'Remove'.
