Is there a way to repair a Windows XP installation without
reinstalling the whole system like you can with Windows
2000?
I have a computer that is freezing up occassionally and is
running XP Pro. I have tried several searches and don't
know what else to do.
I recently bought another video card because they said
there were some problems bith TNT cards and Duron
processors.
Thanks for any help!

Hi Paul,
Sure, a repair install is pretty easy. Follow these steps to do a repair
install which should preserve your data, settings, and programs:
1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from
the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you want
to
repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.
Note that you will need your Product Key for this procedure, so have it
handy before you begin.

The problem with this "repair method" is you must reload all WINXP updates
you have made. To minimise this you should ensure the disk you use has the
SP1 update "slipstreamed" onto it. Instructions on how to "slipstream this
update, if you have applied it, can be found on the MS site. You can do a
"limited" repair by running "sfc \scannow", see Help and Support for details
on how to do this.
The likelyhood is your problem relates to an incompatibility between WINXP
and other software you may have loaded. Are you quite sure all software on
your machine is WINXP compatible?
