Have I just not found the right method, or has Microsoft
botched up mail merges in XP such that you can't insert a
space or return between fields, while inserting fields
individually from the 'Insert Merge Field' box?

Are you talking about XP as Windows XP or do you mean Office
XP?
Windows XP is an operating system and it has no "mail merge"
but Office XP (aka 2002) has a mail merge in several
applications...

Yes, I realised after posting this message that I was in
the wrong forum (I'd been browsing around and forgot to go
back to the right one). I am talking about Office XP, and
in particular, Word 2002.
