windows xp sp2 and older software

is there a cut off vertion or date that windows XP sp2 has for older software.
we can not afford expensive software so we get software that is old , and
also are still using software we got over 6 years ago

can a software product that only is writen for windows 95 work on xp sp2

Presumably, the software can work on SP2 if it can work on Windows XP.
