I recently had to reinstall Windows XP. Now, I have two
Windows XP folders showing on startup and would like to
delete the one that referes to the previous Windows XP
folder. How do I delete the line that refers to the
previous file?
Thanks

Hi,
You will have to make changes to the boot.ini file.

Hi, Papasan.
Two steps, both pretty easy:
1. Go to System Properties | Advanced | Startup and Recovery Settings.
First make sure that your "good" WinXP is the Default, then click the Edit
button. This will bring up C:\boot.ini in Notepad. Delete the line under
[operating systems] that refers to the "bad" WinXP; this will be the one
with rdisk(#)partition(#) that does NOT match the one in the default= line
above, under [boot loader].
2. Delete the "boot folder" for the "bad" WinXP. This is named X:\Windows
by default (the X: varies depending on the volume you installed it on), but
check to be sure. WinXP won't let you delete the one that you are using, so
you should be protected from disaster, but be careful anyhow.
Step 1 gets rid of the entry in the boot menu; Step 2 recovers the GBs of
disk space that the other copy of WinXP may be taking up.
