I lost my hard drive and had to have a new one installed
and in the process, aside from losing more than I wanted
to -- I've learned to back up more frequently -- I can no
longer find how to set up the email so that after a
preset number of seconds the message shows as read. It
stays in an unread state until I manually switch to
another email. I've gone into settings etc. and can't
even find an option that covers this.
Thanks.

From the Outlook Express menu:
Tools | Options | Read | (first item use the spinner or type in the delay
time manually)

For Outlook (as opposed to Outlook Express) go to
Tools > Options > Other > Preview Pane
and set the timing delay
