Download freezes after sp2 update

Anybody else out there had problems with downloads? I
loaded SP2 yesterday (over XP Pro SP1) and since then my
machine hangs every time I try to download anything from
the net. Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing, it's a cold reboot
every time. Any ideas?

did you turn off antivirus and firewalls during the sp2
install?

Good question. Antivirus was off, firewall wasn't.

Did another install (from disk)with both antivirus and
firewall off. No change- exactly the same problem. The
machine hangs after a few seconds/minutes connected to
the internet.
