View Full Version : SP2 firewall
September 17th 04, 06:48 PM
I installed SP2 and I turned off Windows firewall
indicating that I was using my own (ZoneAlarm). The
security center turned amber.
But it doesn't hold this setting and every time I boot up
I get a red warning that my computer is not protected
because the firewall was turned off. This is very
annoying.
Do you know how I can make the security center hold its
setting that I am being monitored by ZoneAlarm?

Hi
Have you tried the "Change the Way Security Center Notifies Me" link
in the left pane at Control Panel/Security Center?
If the "Change the Way Security Center Notifies Me" doesn't stick
when you reboot, you can do the following:
To "solve" this problem, you can disable the Security Center service.
Start/Run --> services.msc
Find "Security Center" in the list, double click on it, set
"Startup type" to Disabled.
There is also a Group Policy setting available to disable the
Security Center (Start/Run--> gpedit.msc).
Take a look at the chapter for the Security Center in
06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC
What settings are added or changed in Windows XP Service Pack 2?
Group Policy settings (page 26 for me)
06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC ("Changes to Functionality in Microsoft Windows XP
Service Pack 2, Part 6: Computer Maintenance") can be downloaded from here:

Note: WinXPSP2_Documentation.zip contains all the .doc downloads...

If you go to control panel.. Security Center and on the left you should have
a box called 'resources'. There is an entry at the bottom to change how
'Security Center Alerts me'. That will allow you to turn off alerts for the
firewall etc individually.

Update to the latest 5.1.011 version of Zone Alarm. This turns off the
Windows firewall for itself as it starts up, and then reports properly
to the Security Center
