I believe there is a bug in SP2 which causes SQL Server 2000 to fail
intermittently with message "General network error. Check your network
documentation."
The error occurs whenever my wireless network interface detects that the
state of connectivity to the wireless access point has transitioned.
When a transition occurs, SQL fails as above for a period of about 30
seconds, and then it recovers.
The failure is manifested in my (.NET WebForms) applications as well as in
SQL Enterprise Manager.
I can trigger the error condition by performing a Disable or Enable on the
interface.

Does anyone else have this problem?

My current work-around is to disable the wireless network interface whenever
I am using SQL Server on important tasks!
