View Full Version : Sometimes hang on Welcome screen after installing SP2

I installed the SP2 security update successfully. I have Windows Home
version. My screens are set to Classic. After SP2 was installed, about 50%
of the time, or more, my boot up would hang on the Welcome screen. I'm the
only user and no password is required, so it should just keep going.
Nothing would get me freed up except cutting off power. The next time I
would boot up, it might boot up properly or it might hang again. I have had
to do the power off/power on scenario up to 5 times before it got past the
Welcome screen. I uninstalled SP2 and the problem has gone away. However, I
would really like to use it. Any ideas? Ed

What preparation did you do before installing SP2? Once we know that, we
can try and narrow down the cause of the problem.

I didn't realize that installing SP2 such a big deal. I just closed down
Symantec A/V, AddSubtract, and ZoneAlarm, and did the download and install
for SP2. The post I got from Rock listed some links to check about what I
should do before installing. I looked at them and have been doing most of
them all along. I keep my program updates up-to-date. I checked for spyware
recently and had none. I defragged a week before I did the update. The only
only icons at the bottom of the screen showing programs running were printer
status and "Safely Remove Hardware"(whatever that is). I'm a very simplistic
PC user. About all I run are Lotus WordPro and 123, plus a level 2 stock
charting program from Qcharts. Nothing fancy.
Incidentally, After installing SP2, I turned off the Windows firewall and
antivirus, preferring to use the ones I already have.
If there's anything else I should have done that may have caused the
problem, please let me know and I'll do it and reinstall SP2. Thanks, Ed

Thanks for all the links, Rock. I have printed them off. I'll read them and
be sure I've done all that is necessary, then try a reinstall of SP2. Ed
