Installed SP2 - All worked great !
But the network LAN icon has vanished and so has the
network card from device manager !!!
But strange thing is everything still works and my
wireless based network is still working.
Any thoughts anyone ???

Hi Dave
Go to device manager, and look at view hidden devices, it may be there. SP2
renamed mine to something else and would not let me change or uninstall it.
I ended up doing a reinstall from scratch. Fortunately it was on a 'spare'
machine with only unimportant stuff on it.

Thanks for the reply R
Yea - I did the view hidden devices thing a while back
and I get the LAN protocols but not the physical adaptor -
hence can't get to the IP settings etc. All very weird.
The prospect of a reinstall ain't too good either. I seem
to be having to reinstall every 6 months or so. Is it not
possible for the great MS to make something that hold's
together for longer than 6 months ??!!
Oh well where's that install disk gone !

A repair installation may be on order now.
Most installations hold up much longer. The main reason for
deteriorating installations is the installation of lots of
substandard pieces of software.

That, of course, you need.
Have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm for some
details.

This type of weird stuff seems to be pretty standard on my SP2
installations. Much of it just seems to go away on one or two reboots.
Icons come back, the desktop is no longer locked down...
