version of XP loaded over 18 months ago is requiring activation...cant
get past it...no hardware upgrades of any kind undertaken....loading
antivirus over a week ago is the only recent change....then today the
machine is out of action

Hi Ray,
Haven't heard of an AV program causing that, but why not simply reactivate?
If the net connection is not avialable (and it should be from safe mode with
networking), then phone it in.

Yes. It happened to me, too. The only thing you can do is reactivate and
move on.
