I have just tried to install from the official disk only
to find that the PC wont launch in anything but safe
mode. I can see no conflicts in the device manager
section. I have had to do a system restore.
Ideas of what to do next?

Uninstall SP 2 (you can do it from Safe Mode.) Then follow this advice from
Microsoft's web site:
"What to Know Before You Download and Install Windows XP Service Pack 2"
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx
and install SP 2 again.

I know it doesn't help but this would aapear to be a
common problem. My computer is 1 month old and I had the
same problem. It wouln't boot up unless in safe mode. I
contacted the manufacturer who tells me that they have
had countless calls of the ame nature. All you can do is
go into safe mode/Control panel/add and remove programs
then uninstall the sevice pack 2. C
