When downloading, files are going into Notepad and are
written in a funny language that I cannot read. I want
my files to go to microsoft word. How do I change my
settings?
Thank you

If these are attachments to emails, the sender decides the file format. Ask
them to resend the file in a format that one of your installed programs can
read.
If downloading from a web site, what kind of files are you downloading?
Most download links, again, lead to files of a specific type. If you do not
have a program installed that can read these files, a viewer or reader may
be available that will allow you to read the files in their intended form.
To determine the type of file, take a close look at its name. If you see
filename.xxx, the .xxx part designates the file type. If you only see
filname and no extension, use Folder Options> View and uncheck the box
to hide known extensions. After making this change, the file extension
should be visible.
The extension is a way to determine what program can read the file. If you
are unable to match up an extension with a program, write back and let us
know what it is. Someone may recognize it and recommend a program to
view the file contents.
