SP2: menu hangs reqs hard reboot

After installing SP2, I started to have system hangs,
requiring hard reboot. In using these: IE, Word and file
Explorer, every so often after I select a right-click
menu pull down, the menu displays, then XP hangs
completely. Only recourse is to turn off the power and
reboot.

Has anyone heard of/experienced similar strangeness?
