View Full Version : Win XP SP2 problems

I installed SP2 over Win XP Pro and I find the information
bar extremely annoying but can't seem to disable it. I
followed the instructions to enable ActiveX controls in
IE's security settings, but the information bar won't go
away.
Furthermore, I can no longer open PDF files locally from a
link in my browser. The information bar indicates that the
PDF could be harmful. I instruct the browser to allow the
blocked content, but only an image placeholder appears in
the browser window instead of the file. I set up Acrobat
as a security exception, but that didn't work.
Until I and my company migrate to the Java Desktop or
another Linux variant, I would appreciate some help with
Microsoft's overly intrusive tools.
Thanks.

Hi,
Refer to this KB ARticle about the information bar.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;843017&Product=winxp
Regarding the PDF file, right click on the link and choose save target as or
open in another window and see what happens.
Try resetting the security settings to the default settings. You might have
set it to high somewhere which blocks all files.

Thanks, but I had already read that information on the
Information Bar. As I mentioned, I cannot seem to disable
the information bar even when I follow the official
Microsoft instructions. Lowering my browser security
settings and enabling ActiveX controls does not help.
I want the PDF files to appear in the browser window just
as they did before installation of SP2. This is no longer
possible even when I attempt to open a PDF that is already
stored on my local computer. I can no longer open up PDF
files in my browser from my company's intranet or LAN,
even if I'm not connected to the Internet. I've talked to
several others who are having the same problem and claim
it's due to some kind of SP2 bug.

Marcalans,
This is not a bug, but due to Local Machine Lockdown implemented in Windows
XP Service Pack 2.
