View Full Version : Is this normal?

I have WinXP-Home. I've noticed that during the boot-up/starting Windows
process, after the desktop has come up and my desktop icons are displayed,
the computer very briefly turns on the light in my A:\ drive (3.5 floppy).
It doesn't appear to try to access it because I don't hear that famous
grinding noise, but the light does come on for 2 or 3 seconds. I get no
errors in Windows, nothing seems to be not found or anything like
that...there is no disk in the drive.

Does this sound normal? If not, what in the world might be causing it?

Thanks

Sounds normal to me, the OS is just checking to see if all
the bits can talk to each other. A little like when you
wake up and wiggle your toes to see that the bad dream
wasn't real.

Interesting. Mine comes on briefly BEFORE the startup occurs as there is a
hierarchy of checked drives for the process. As long as no errors occur, I
see no problem.

My gateway PC does a similar flash of the floppy drive on both start up and
shut down. I assume this is just normal self testing as it doesn't seen to
be a problem

Hope that helps at least a bit

Michael,

If you have an AV program installed check the settings and see if check
floppy on access, or words to that effect, is enabled. If so, disable it and
see if that solves the problem.

Also, if that doesn't work, try putting a disk in your floppy drive, access
it, then while the disk is still inserted, use the upper left hand "X" to
close the contents and remove the disk. Restart the computer and see if the
problem is solved.

I had already thought of checking my AV program...did that...didn't see
anything. When I'm home I will try the other trick. Do you think it is
something that simple, like maybe Windows remembers at some point a 3.5
window was open when the computer got shut down? By doing what your
suggesting, will that clear out the memory or whatever? Just curious.

Thanks.

Tried inserting disk, opening files, closing with the X. This made no
difference. I don't see anything in my AV program. I use EZ-Anti Virus.

Perhaps this is normal operation...only noticed it last night, but frankly,
it could have been doing it all along in XP, since I bought this machine
last September. Any other thoughts?

Thanks.

Kelly,

I've gone through many of your check points. #4 and #5 I cannot get to
work.

Tried #8, never have used the Scheduler, but I can maybe look at that as
well.

So far, nothing on your list as helped.

Yoou may have missed my previous reply.
Yes. The computer is set to check the floppy first, then harddrive.
It looking to see if there is aboot disk in the floppy. And if not, It
goes to the hdd to boot..

You can go into BIOS and change the boot order.
