I have to reset firewall monitoring after every restart ? I lose my LAN
connections every time I shutdown. Is there a way to avoid this hassle?

Hi

Have you tried the "Change the Way Security Center Notifies Me" link
in the left pane at Control Panel/Security Center?

If the "Change the Way Security Center Notifies Me" doesn't stick
when you reboot, you can do the following:

To "solve" this problem, you can disable the Security Center service.

Start/Run --> services.msc

Find "Security Center" in the list, double click on it, set
"Startup type" to Disabled.

There is also a Group Policy setting available to disable the
Security Center (Start/Run--> gpedit.msc).

Take a look at the chapter for the Security Center in
06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC

What settings are added or changed in Windows XP Service Pack 2?
Group Policy settings (page 26 for me)

06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC ("Changes to Functionality in Microsoft Windows XP
Service Pack 2, Part 6: Computer Maintenance") can be downloaded from here:

Note: WinXPSP2_Documentation.zip contains all the .doc downloads...

I'm not sure what you mean by "install properly". I've installed it on
different machines, I have installed it by internet download, also used the
cd-rom. I have the same problem every time, also on the other LANS that I
have up and running. Is there something I could be doing wrong during the
install? thanks

I *think* that if using a third party firewall that is *not* identified
by the security center, TCP/IP filtering is locked down by default.
Open the TCP/IP filtering properties of the connection, General tab,
Advanced properties, Options tab, TCP/IP filtering properties, select
Enable filtering and change Permit Only to Permit All.

I have been shutting down the security center and windows firewall in the
services panel, but after restarting a machine I have to go back in, restart
the services and turn firewall monitoring back off again. have not tried
"change the way windows security notifies me" yet...

I think you are right. I am using a third party firewall that is not
identified by windows. however, now I can't find the TCP/IP filtering
properties.

I have been having this problem on 2 PCs connected through a home network
router that has its own firewall. I have patiently reset the monitoring
option every time I reboot. Recently, the need to reset options has gone
away. Now, whenever I reboot either computer, I am not notified that I am
at risk and the setting stick. The only thing I can assume is that if you
tell it enough times that you have your own firewall, it will eventually
believe you and leave you alone.

Found out why it stopped warning me. During the last reboot, it turned the
firewall on without saying anything. If I hadn't checked Security Center, I
never would have known it.
