windows doesn't remove the read-only attribute of a
folder when i deselect it in it's properties window.
Windows only removes the attribute of the subfiles and
subfolders.

Any ideas to solve this problem?

Whenever I open an excel-file, I get a message that the
file is protected or already openend by someone else.
I've checked all the pc's, no one has opened the file.
Then my only option is opening read-only or keep the d*mn
thing closed. I'm getting frustrated by this annoying
little problem. Do you know of a way to get around this?

Thanks a million

This is a setting in Excel that is causing this. It's purpose is to
avoid unauthorized changes to the file. Check the help file for
directions on turning the feature off. If you are unable to find that
information, check out the Excel newsgroups in the online Office
Community: http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/default.asp

Is the file shared?

Excel stores in Windows\Temp(win98) folder a copy(s) of any file that is open.

Sometimes this *.tmp file is not deleted from the Temp folder when you close
out Excel(maybe a crash of Excel?) or the file, so Excel thinks it is still
open.

You can try a re-boot and see if that clears it up. If not, after a re-boot,
clear out your Windows\Temp folder.

If using WinXP your Temp folder would be under user.......

Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temp

If you are a Net, the temp folder could be just about anywhere.

Notes on deleting Windows\Temp files............

Re-boot to make sure there are no Temp files being used by Windows(program
installs, updates etc.) It is easy to forget that when Windows stated "Your
Computer needs to re-boot to complete this update. Re-boot Now?" and you
clicked "No, I'll do it later". The files are stored in Windows\Temp folder.
If you delete them before a re-boot, you can hoop whatever was going on.

After the re-boot, select all files in Windows\Temp folder and delete....
