How do I copy all file(s) from HD to larger HD ???

Hi,

In win98, SE, ME, if I wanted to copy an entire drive to a larger
drive I used XCOPY32.EXE in a dos window.

What is the equivalent file when using XP ???

Hi, Ricky.

Xcopy.exe. This automatically runs the 32-bit version of Xcopy.

For a little mini-help file showing all the switches available with Xcopy,
just type "xcopy /?" at the DOS prompt. For copying an entire drive, I
usually use the switches /c /h /e /r /k, but you may have your own
favorites. ;^} This copies everything EXCEPT the Registry files.

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply, OK I admit it I'm an idiot, searched for
xcopy32.exe ...... never thought of xcopy.exe.

I go back to the old 16 bit etc etc :-)

Back again,

Unfortunatly the Xcopy.exe command with switches doesn't copy a couple
of file in the \Windows\System32\Config Dir:- namely -

the 2 Sam files
" 2 SECURITY files
" " 2 Software files
" " 2 System files


The Original Windows dir shows (including hidden) 20 objects
The other only shows 10 objects

I'm told that the file are in use by another person or program,
Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

Yep. Those ARE the Registry files. And Xcopy won't copy them. Neither
will Copy, or anything else I know of, as long as you are booted into THIS
copy of WinXP.

If you can put the HD into another computer, you can boot into THAT copy of
WinXP and copy them. Or, if you have a dual-boot system, you can boot into
the OTHER copy of WinXP and copy these.

For a long time, I thought that these were "system" files and were being
copied by Xcopy. Then someone (Alex Nichol?) pointed out that the Registry
files were not being copied.
