the page size defaults to legal siz regardless of the
default printer. you can change the paper size, but the
size returns to legal when you return to the
application.... strange problem

Check your paper size setting in the printer's properties. Most likely
this is where the legal size is set since it pops up in various
programs. Also check your Page Setup in the program that you are going
to print from.
