View Full Version : Start up issue

Lately on booting I am presented with the following message with two options
"Please select the operating system to start: 1)Microsoft Windows XP Setup
2)Microsoft Windows XP Home edition". "Windows XP Setup" appears to be the
default selection and if I do not highlight "Home Edition" within the
required four seconds I wind up with a black screen and a cursor. This is
easily corrected by rebooting and selecting "Home Edition", but how do I
either default to "Home Edition" or avoid the issue altogether?

Thanks, Bob

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not work for you, then:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then look similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

Hi Bob,

Start/run msconfig, go to the boot.ini tab. Click the entry referring to the
system you want, then "set as default". Click apply/ok and reboot to see if
it works correctly. Then go back to that tab and click on "check all boot
paths", it should prompt to remove the invalid entry.

If it does not, remove the invalid entry manually. Start/run "C:\boot.ini"
and remove the unwanted line from the [operating systems] section.
