Please help!! I have just installed SP2 & now the media player will not open.
I then downloaded the new Player 10 which said it was a successful install
but still no luck. I system restored to before the SP2 install & the player
worked fine. I have tried running the .exe file file & but it just does
nothing...it is like I never even clicked the button.
Please help!!

What's the problem with just going to a state where the player works and
leaving it there?

I am getting the same thing on my machine, but I just can't burn cd's or rip
cd's on media player 10. I don't know what to do.

Is it practical or even desirable to leave run windows without SP2 installed
- will I not have security risks or constant prompts from microsoft to
unpgrade?

With a good firewall, up-to-date AV, and all the updates to SP1, you are
better protected than relying on SP2.

Running MS OS are always a big security risk, especially since the virus
writing scum target it more than any other OSs.

Turn off Auto Update, and ignore installing SP2 on Windows Update.

The security risks might arise from malicious scripts, Active X controls
and the like on innocent looking web pages. Such things can exploit
'buffer over-runs' in various ways, and are not going to get caught by
either firewall or AV. A lot of work has gone into modifying very many
modules to remove this over-run possibility (that is a main reason for
the size of SP2); without it you remain vulnerable, short of turning off
these active facilities - which greatly restricts the pages you can use

Some firewalls can totally block ActiveX controls, and allow it on specific
web sites that allow them to run on. I've had to add Windows Update to my
list of site exceptions.
But I believe in taking a proactive approach to my computer security, and
not rely on MS's patchwork quilt to not have any more holes.
