After installing xp sp2, I cannot see the 2 'tv's' that used to appear on the
bottom right hand of the screen showing whether my internet connection is
active and which I used to right click to disconnect from the internet.
Where have they gone & how can I get them back ?

Control Panel/network connection, select properties for the
connection and put a check in the box that says to show the
icon.

Hi

Go to Control Panel>Network Connections. Right click on the appropriate
connection and select Properties. Make sure that 'Show icon in notification
area when connected' is enabled.

Hi Sean,

This does happen at times, not specifically related to SP2, however. Some
info for you consider:

Right click Network Places/Properites/Right click your Dial-up/
Properties and place a check in the box lower right that reads:
Show icon in notification area when connected.

Check your settings here:
IE/Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Settings/Advanced/
Disconnect when...

When you quit Internet Explorer, you may not be prompted to disconnect even
if the Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed option is enabled.

The following registry value also verifies that the option is enabled: Go to
Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\RemoteAccess\Profile\"Connection
Name"\EnableExitDisconnect. The value should be 01 00 00 00.

This behavior can also occur if the Easy CD Creator Adaptec starts
automatically at startup. If this is the case:

To prevent the Easy CD Creator program from starting automatically, remove
the entry for Easy CD Creator from the following registry key:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

If this isn't the case, examine the other runkeys listed. If you are
uncertain of what the runkeys are for, export the key and post the contents
here.

To do so, go to Start/Run/CMD. At the end of the path type: cd Desktop,
enter. copy and paste this line:

Reg Export HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Run.Reg

Once done, the exported .reg file will be located on your Desktop.

Note: Messenger is also a culprit.

If you are using Hotmail, to disable Messenger from IE:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Messenger.MsgrObject. Right click on the
Messenger.MsgrObject key and select rename. Rename it to
Messenger.MsgrObjectold

This will prevent Messenger from loading when you access your account via
the Hotmail web page, it will also prevent the delay when Messenger has been
removed or disabled.

To disable Messenger from OE:

Disable/Remove Messenger and/or from OE (Line 44)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To set Idle TimeOut:

1. The Idle TimeOut option in Dial-Up Networking must be set for the
connection to hang up after being idle. Open the Dial-Up Networking dialog
box, and select User Preferences from the More button.

2. Disable Autodial by location, and set Idle Seconds Before Hanging Up to
the desired amount of time: This value should be greater than 60.

3. Choose Logon Preferences from the More button, and set Idle Seconds
Before Hanging Up to the same value as User Preferences.

4. Open Control Panel/Services and disable the Remote Access Autodial
Manager service.

Another option: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\LanmanServer\Parameters.
In the right pane, find Autodisconnect and change the time accordingly.

Or...

Start/Run/net config server /autodisconnect:30 (30 being an example).

That is checked on my system and they still do not show up.
I just turned on auto-disconnect so I will get a prompt asking
me if I want to disconnect.

Go to Control Panel, Network connections. R-click the connection icon
concerned, Properties and check the 'Show Icon' box at the bottom
