View Full Version : Upgrade Minimum Requirements

Want to upgrade from W98 to XP Pro on several workstations on a small LAN.
Microsoft says minimum processor speed is 233 MHz and they recommend at
least 300 MHz. What is the ideal minimum processor speed and is there a
minimum FSB requirement?

Thanks in advance

I would not install Windows XP Professional on any computer
that has less than a 500MHz CPU and 256MB of RAM. If your
computers do not have that computing horsepower, consider
installing Windows 2000 instead.

Can you define "ideal minimum"? It really depends on what you want the
system to do. If you just want to surf the net, e-mail, do some basic
word-processing, listening to music etc then a P-200 mmx with 128MB of RAM
will do it. If you want to do gaming, work with graphics or sound files then
a P4 1Ghz (or higher), 512 RAM, decent video/sound cards are going to be
your bare minimums.

Thanks Carey. In my mixed environment have an equal number of P-550s and
850s still running W98 and I wasn't sure whether they would be worth
upgrading. Thanks again.
