View Full Version : SP2 Firewall warning - minor annoyance
...D.

I installed SP2 and it works very nicely. The little problem I am having is
that I deleted my Norton Firewall, and I did not turn on XP's firewall - but
I am behind a router, so that is my hardware firewall. I just noticed page
loads were faster without Norton Firewall.
Now the problem is I get a warning from XP SP2 now telling me to look at my
firewall configuration, I do, and I check the box "I am aware of my firewall
situation and will monitor it myself". But several reboots later, I get the
same warning again when I boot up, and I go do the same thing again. Any
fix for this?

Open your Control Panel, then double-click the Security Center icon.
In the left side, click on the link titled: "Change the way Security Center
alerts me". Next, uncheck the Firewall Alert Setting, then click OK.

Sometimes changing the settins doesn't stick. In that case disable the
security center service in services.msc.

You can turn off the Security Center service in Admin Tools - Services.
But I don't think I would entirely trust a router - I would have the SP2
firewall on, or one of the free ones like free Zone Alarm, which does
not cause significant overhead

Carey, an update. Here it is 9-24 about 6AM west coast time USA, and I've
started the computer up 3 or 4 times since I thanked you for the above, and
I did exactly what you mentioned to do, and still, I get the warning on this
boot up this morning about me & my firewall & "I may be at risk", and press
here to see more about it. Again, I just unchecked the box in front of
firewall which I had previously unchecked, and went into the section about
how the warnings work, and told it to not inform about the firewall
situation which I had done previously but all was as if I never did any of
this. Now, I have left that window, and somewhere at the top it said
something to the effect that my firewall was unmonitored. Fine.
So either I did not press "OK" last time (which I am pretty sure I did),
once each time of the two instances mentioned, or I did, and it for some
reason, forgets what I have done at about 4 starts &/or reboots after
shutdowns. I think it is going to happen again, and if it does, I'll post
again. (MY situation is using a router as a hardware firewall and I do not
want to use any software firewall).

As I posted before, sometimes the setting doesn't stick. The next
recourse is disable the security center service.
