View Full Version : SP2 sucess rate???

Does anyone have a percentage as to the chances of a SP2 upgrade NOT
causing problems when installed? I realize that you only hear from
those encountering problems, and those who succeed do not complain, but
my sister has XP on her computer and I am fearful that she might
encounter problems after the upgrade. That means I will be deeply
involved to restore her computer should she encounter problems.

I have read also sorts of complaining about the upgrade causing problems. I
have installed it on two computers running XP Pro without a hassle.

I can't see what could possibly go wrong, but some people have a knack of
just destroying their computers.

I just run the set-up and let it do its thing.

The only thing I struck was my FTP software couldn't connect to the server
because of the Firewall set-up. But this was easily fixed in the FTP
software itself (setting it to passive transfer mode).

If it does cause a problem, there is always the rollback option.

The success rate of of SP2 is open to conjecture my
friend, you won't get the truth anyway!
Good Luck,
Mac.

For home users with tons of programs installed that were downloaded off the
net, not to mention all the spyware most home users have on their computers,
will have a greater percentage of problems with SP2.

Our Computer club has performed 15 updates on our own computers, and assisted
many of the Club members in installatons. No problems other than some were
unable to play games online until the program was posted in the Exception
list of the Windows Firewall dialog box.

My advice, run Ad-Aware or Spybot S&D and do a thorough antivirus scan with
updated definitions (or signatures). Back up data to an external device (or
second hard drive) before starting. Down load the SP2 and burn it to a CD.

Most of the problems that you read about here are caused by the individuals
not taking due diligence in maintaining their computers over time. Windows
update should have been on Automatic since Day 1 of Windows XP.

To lessen the number of adware files placed on the system, download and
install the Mozilla Firefox browser, set it to import the IE Favorites and
set it to be the default browser.

Good Link. Just keep in mind that most of the posters are IT professionals.

My personal success rate with SP2 is 100% counting my own systems,
those belonging to my family, and all of my customers who are running
Windows XP.

I know that others have encountered problems but I think the overall
percentages (some sites say more than 20% have had problems) are being
exaggerated.

I have installed it on about 75 computers now. The only problem was with one
computer where the customer was using AOL.

I broke my own rule of "don't ever work on a computer that has AOHell
installed", but she (the customer) was so damn "good looking" (-:

Who knows for sure. It depends on what one calls a success v. failure.
But the key to optimize chances for a successful upgrade is
preparation and knowledge:

I have either updated or been involved with five computers
that were running XP (4 Home and one Pro) and all updated
without serious problems.
These computers are 3 Dells of various models and ages,
4300, 4400, 2400 (newest) and my Intel D845GBVL running XP
Pro and a neighbors cobbled together system built some time
ago and of generally unknown heritage. All updated
smoothly. Two were done with the IT download (the 2400 and
mine). The lady across the street had the official MS SP2
CD. The other two used Windows Update. The worst event was
that firewall permissions needed to be set. On my computer
a part of iTunes-Windows began to return an error that
gearsec.exe did not load. Since iTunes was just downloaded
for an experiment (to see what was available) I solved the
problem by deleting iTunes since I never used it.

All systems were defragged and both SpyBot and Ad-Aware run.
The unknown system was running FAT32 (was changed to NTFS
after the change).

The biggest change is that pictures are blocked when the
"phone home" and the pop-up blocker works well.
