Whenever I try to delete a contact Windows Messenger signs me out and a
status message "<insert contact name here> cannot be deleted". Has anyone
else experienced this? Is there any way to get around it?
Many thanks

Greetings Steevo,
Are you utilizing any sort of router?

Nope, just got a 56k modem connection.

I have the same problem! It's very frustrating. Everywhere
I look it's "by design".
I thought it was the router, but even after plugging my
laptop directly into the ADSL line and without any
firewall it still wouldn't let me delete my contacts.

Hi,
Disconnecting while removing a contact is not "By Design". If you're using MSN Messenger you
might try the following (this doesn't apply to Windows Messenger), firstly shut down
Messenger (right-click its icon in the notification area and click Exit), then click Start,
then Run, then type:
%appdata%\microsoft
and click OK.
Right-click the MSN Messenger folder and choose Delete. After all this, restart Messenger
and see if the problem has been corrected.

Thanks for that - you don't happen to have any suggestions for Win Messenger
do you? Would reinstalling help or is it service glitch not a software
problem?
Many thanks

Just tried doing a repair installation of Win Messenger and problem now
fixed. Our anonymous friend might also wish to try this as well!

Hi Steevo,
Yeah, I was about to suggest that you remove the contact cache within Windows Messenger
(forgot to add that to my original post), the repair probably fixed this on its own for you.

Well, you certainly were a lot more help than the Microsoft support
personnel. Having explained the problem to them I have just received the
following email from Marion, Messenger Support:

I understand that when you try to delete a contact on Windows Messenger you
received the ' cannot be deleted'. I know how inconvenient this can be and I
apologize.
In order for us to effectively assess and evaluate your issue, please
provide us with a screenshot by following these steps:

Quite how exactly do they expect me to show Messenger signing out when I try
to delete a contact in a screenshot?!
