Windows XP Missing Desktop and Does Not Boot

After the logon screen No desktop appears and if I try to
start explorer.exe in the task manager. it give error: "no
program has been alloctaed to open this file type.
Only a few of the processes start. Netlogon does not start
either.What could be the problem?
