Printing on a shared printer

Hi,

I have a small network with two PC's, both of them running WinXP PRO.
I have a printer connected to one of them (which I use as a server), I'll
call it SERVER, which is shared.
The second PC (LAPTOP) is connected to it.
When I want to print from the LAPTOP on that printer, it prints only if some
user is logged on SERVER pc. If no user is logged on SERVER, the printing
job started from LAPTOP just "vanish", without any error message.

What should I do to be able to print even if SERVER pc has no user logged
on?

For your setup, the host computer must be up and running before you can
print from your laptop. If you want total independence in using the printer
from either computer, then you need a print server device and a router (some
routers such as the SMC7004ABR have a built-in server). For information on
how to use a router and print server for a Local Area Network (LAN), go to
www.practicallynetworked.com.

However this works very well if ther server bc runns Win2000 Server. No
matter is someone is logged on or not, I can use that printer from a remote
PC. Why this isn't possible on WinXP.

I have a 3-computer LAN with all three connected to a router which also
includes a print server. Two of the computers use Windows XP, the other one
uses Windows 98SE. My printer is connected to the router, and not to any
computer. Yet all 3 computers have access to the printer, whether or not any
of the other computers are turned on. Works great.
