You are using Adobe Reader from
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html ?
Odds are there is nothing wrong with the Adobe program. It works just
fine for millions of people. Something with your machine, but I can't
think what would be differnt to significantly affect Adobe other than
some computer virus or worm has caused an unusual flaw.
1. check for virues and worms with anti-virus and something like ad-aware
2. get a fresh copy of Adobe Reader and try installinging again, but
this time turn off virus protection software.
3. Seek assistance from Adobe support.

Are you using "Add Remove Programs" from Control Panel to get rid of the
instances of Acrobat? If not try that and then download and install again.
Is it possible that the files that you think are .pdf's are not really
..pdf's???
Good luck!
