confused printer user

I have a lexmark x 85 printer/copier that worked fine on windows
millenium...since then I have had windows xp installed on the pc...Now the
printer does not work.I've uninstalled the printer, then tried to
re-install..with loads of various messages that the pc does not recognise the
printer..that the printer is still installes (although when i look at the
printer section on the menu i'm informed that I have no printer). I've just
taken a major step (for one that cannot walk and chew gum at the same time)
and downloaded a 'PATCH' file from windows but am now told the driver is not
digitally signed!!!!.I'm begining to despair...if anyone can asssist ( in
janet and john language) I would be obliged.

Use the XP driver that is not digitally signed.. take the option to continue
anyway..
