When I boot, I get a screen that looks like a single pane from Windows
Explorer (the file handling utility, not the browser) and it has SYSTEM 32
at the top. Then all of the files in that directory are listed. This is
the end screen of the boot process. I just close the screen and everything
is fine - but this is annoying

Hi,
Check this one:

System32 Folder Opens When Logging on to Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;170086
(applies to WinXP as well)
