I'm reinstalling Windows XP Pro, and while installing some software and
updates, the taskbar chevron has disappeared.

How do I get it back?

Why did it happen?

Thanks

Is there a way to change the order of the icons, so that I can "always hide
the first icon" - the icon I don't care to necessarily see?

Thanks

Right click on the task bar, pick properties and in the Notification Area
you can check "Hide inactive icons".
