FYI, 'diskette' refers to a floppy disk (usually 1.4MB capacity). SP2 is
around 266MB. You'd need one helluva compression application for that!

For SP2 to be available on floppy disk 197,380 would be required.

As Miss Perspica Tick said, you would need
197,380 1.44mb floppy diskettes to hold Service Pack 2.

That's -- One hundred ninety-seven thousand, three hundred and eighty

Obviously, Microsoft can't provide millions of 197,380-diskette sets,
so they provided millions of CD's which contain Service Pack 2, plus
various other content.
Get the CD here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

It's totally free, and even includes shipping.

Well - a CD, It would take about 200 diskettes.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

(Free). But you will also find it at the moment on many Computer
Magazine cover CDs, and at some stores like Staples (Customer Services)

Ok If you say so. I'm sure there will be a technical reason as to why so
many. And it's totally irrelevant anyway, but take this analogy:
A tank holds 266 litres of water, a bucket holds 1.44 litres. How many
buckets...etc? Answer 184.72. That's simple arithmetic. Why does it not apply
to the diskette question?

I think that somebody is confusing a 1.44 MB floppy and a
650 MB CD,

you can order a free XP SP2 CD
from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

No one is disputing the fact that it is not available my friend. I was
questioning Miss Perspicacia Tick's arithmetic. I made it 184.72. Alex Nichol
estimated about 200. Mistakes tend to be questioned here.

Let's put it like this:
It will take a LOT of 1.44mb floppies to hold Service Pack2. Too many
for Microsoft to send millions of 100-floppy sets out to its
customers.
