stand by is unavailable at the shut down screen and there
is no hibernate choice on the power management control
panel.
Please help.

You need to download and install the latest, correct, video card adapter
driver designed to work with Windows XP, then Standby will be available.
Visit the support website of the manufacturer of your computer or
video card and search for the latest Windows XP compatible drivers
for your specific video card.

I had an Asus K7M m/b and could never get Standby, only Hibernate.
Suspected a driver issue but could never resolve it, updated everything
including BIOS, graphics card and chipset drivers.
