After downloading SP2 into my laptop I had a huge problem with the display.
When Windows starts up, the Taskbar and the Start Menu were missing.

Out of no choice, I had to completly restore the laptop to its original
state by
formatting the C Drive. Ever since, I have a phobia of downloading the SP2.

My laptop's O/S is Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 1). Can anyone
advise on how to have the SP2 downloaded without any Display Problem?

Daphne;
First, especially for laptops, check with the manufacturer about SP-2
compatibility.
Get the latest Windows XP video drivers.
Then follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist:
