View Full Version : Ok... How to safely re-install XP?
The Ancient Flatulence

Ok, lads and lassies...
I have finally reached the conclusion that my current dilemma is
irretrievably insoluble. (I can't fix what's wrong with my XP box.)
Laying aside the rising rant I feel surging in my bosom (yes, men have
them, too) toward those who unabashedly asserted to me that XP was
light-years ahead of Win98, ME, 2000 etc in terms of stability and
reliability... I now come -- hat in hand and shame-faced with humility
-- to inquire of the "gods" of XP as to what I should now do to ensure
a safe, smooth and uneventful re-installation of XP Home Edition?
I am aware that there is a little file somewhere that I'll need to
backup...something to do with the activation of the XP product.
What other items do I need to worry about?
Antivirus was just bought online today. (Symantec) Is there info there
I should record to be able to reinstall the av?
Is there a boot disk that XP can write to give me the bare minimum I
need to access the CD drive?
I have an HP ze5470us laptop. I hear that this is a Dell wrapped in
HP's logo? Are there any special precautions in regard to this model?
My disks are (I believe) simple system restore-type disks...not the
full-fledged XP.
Any --ANY-- sincere and reliable info will be deeply appreciated. Even
pointers to web sites specializing in this procedure will be
gratefully received.
TIA

How paradoxical.

Ah, it's yet another one of those "you don't know the answer" lamers.

.... brought about by the length of your OP.

A euphemism for the sacred Welsh art of communicating in usenet posts using
secret fart signals.

Hi
Have a look at the following links for re-installing XP:
"Clean Install Windows XP"
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html
"How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install"
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
Courtesy of MVP Michael Stevens.
BTW - using those little files will not work with a clean install of XP =
- wpa.dbl & wpa.bak (windows\system32 folder).
