Very netbios browsing after SP2 update

I am hoping someone out there can help with this problem.

I have 4 computers on a home network connected via a ADSL modem come router,
all running XP. After allowing auto update to install SP2 on 2 of the
computers I noticed that NetBIOS browsing to these from the remaining two
was very slow (25 seconds to open up the first window showing shared
resources on the SP2 PC). IP connectivity is still fine (pings echo within
1ms) and once you have opened a window to a directory on the remote PC, file
transfers occur at about 65Mbps but the initial delay is a real pain.

I have tried uninstalling SP2 but the slow NetBIOS problem remains on both
PCs.

Hi George, :)

Here are some items you can play with that might affect the delay time.

Change the net work connections to use Netbios over TCP/IP (a check box on a
TAB under ADVANCED button under the DSN section.

(reason: The router may not be talking Netbios the same as computers
DHCP/DSN is expecting. Thye default is do the default first then do Netbios
over TCP/IP, hense a delay.)

DHCP on router may be slow? fireware?
(Assign the IP the router issues to each computer, permentantly to the
clients. There will be no lease to renew.)

Uncheck extra network add-ons: Not needed on small NETWORKS.
(Uncheck QoS and Discovery and UPNP, etc.
QoS is basically not used on a small network. Discovery??? can can not
determine the type when netbios is inside TCP/IP packet so it is not
needed.)

Assign one of the computers to be the master browser.
(This is automatic but over time it can be channeled to a particular
computer. How? Assign the MB to the computer that reboots very seldom during
the daily uptime. Make sure it is the last one turned off and the first one
turned on. Sometimes this will get messed up but can be reset by leaving it
on over night, turning off the others for 72 min, etc.
