Greetings

I have a laptop running Windows XP. I've just installed SP2 and now when I
startup the computer 'Outlook Express' opens automatically. The dialog box
shows that it is trying to connect to a 'Local Area Network' but as I use a
dialup connection it returns the server not found error.

..Any ideas how to stop 'Outlook Express' from opening automatically
following this install of SP2.

Many thanks

Did you check the startup folder to see if it somehow got in there?

Was OE running when you installed SP2? Was your anti-virus application?

OE is not in the startup folder, nor was it running when I installed SP2. I
didn't switch my anti-virus software off when installing, will this have
affected it?

Yes, it could have done so. What AV and version is it? To assure a clean
install, your anti-virus application should be disabled and all other
running processes (e.g., OE) closed before installing anything, including
Windows Updates.

How do you connect? Have you installed software from an ISP-provided CD or
downloaded from the ISP's pages? Some of them can register OE to start on
boot.

Your system may have been infected by some hijackware/Trojan /before/ you
installed SP2 and it may be what's causing OE to load at startup now. We
are seeing more and more cases where the install of SP2 has revealed malware
previously hidden in WinXP or WinXP SP1(a), Mat.

Explore the above avenues first, please, before contemplating
uninstalling/re-installing SP2.

Furthermore, most of us are recommending that those with laptops, especially
older ones, contact the manufacturer for SP2-related info before installing
SP2. In your case, I would not have upgraded until I got an "all clear"
from the manufacturer as well as downloaded links for any model-specific
drivers which SP2 might require.
