My homepage preference keeps being reset to an address
that I don't want to use. Where is this likely to be
coming from and how can it be stopped?

First eliminate any scumware.

I suggest you download and regularly use "SpyBOT search and destroy"
to get rid of the scumware that is most likely causing your problem.
The program will fix the registry without the need for you to use the
registry editor.
I think it is a great program along with AdAware and others.
