I have just acquired a new computer with Win XP (home ed)
I keep getting pop up messages, some of them of an
extremely objectionable nature. How can I turn this
feature off?

Is it new or new to you?

What sort of pop-ups?

They are not a feature of WXP Home and if they turn up when you are web
browsing you can get pop-up stopping programs. If they turn up when off
line, it seems as if your 'new' PC might already be in need of a good clean!

Get yourself some spyware such as Spybot, Ad-Aware and many others. This article will
be helpful

Pop-up stoppers will only cure the symptoms NOT the cause. The OP needs a
good firewall.

You need a good firewall installed and you need to block NETBIOS traffic.

Rubbish. these programs do NOT stop pop-ups. The OP needs a firewall.

Greetings --

Does the title bar of these pop-ups read "Messenger Service?"

This a type of spam has become quite common over the past few
months, and unintentionally serves as a valid security "alert." It
demonstrates that you haven't been taking sufficient precautions while
connected to the Internet. Your data probably hasn't been compromised
by these specific advertisements, but if you're open to this exploit,
you may well be open to other threats. Install and use a decent,
properly configured firewall. (Disabling the messenger service, as
some people recommend, only hides the symptom, and does nothing to
secure your machine.) And ignoring or just "putting up with" these
messages and the problem they represent is particularly foolish.

For Internet pop-ups, you might try the free 12Ghosts Popup-killer
from http://12ghosts.com/ghosts/popup.htm or Pop-Up Stopper from
http://www.panicware.com/. Myself, I use Norton Internet Security,
which, in addition to containing Norton Anti-Virus and Personal
Firewall, also blocks most of the pop-up adds on the Internet.

Depends on what type of pop-ups you are talking about.

If its the Messenger Service ones that look like its from
MSN, then a firewall like ZoneAlarm (free) will stop them.

If you are talking about pop-up advertising from websites
when you are surfing, then you either need some Pop-up
stoppers, etc... free ones are available, but I have found
they still don't stop everything.

I suggest you try using another Internet Browser:
Mozilla. It has a built in preference that DOES NOT allow
UNCLICKED windows to open. That has stopped every site's
pop-up advertising that I've been to.

Could you please quote at least some of the post you are replying to, as it
keeps the thread intact.

Thank you.

I was referring to the original poster's question.

I have just acquired a new computer with Win XP (home ed)
I keep getting pop up messages, some of them of an
extremely objectionable nature. How can I turn this
feature off? "
-------------------------------------------------

Since he mentioned some pop ups are of "objectionable
nature", sounds like these popups are coming from internet
surfing. Hence, perhaps he's referring to advertising.

www.mozilla.org would be a very good browser to use to go
to these sites. As Mozilla has a function to "disable"
popup windows.
