I istalled sp2 from cd but in the update list I get a
message that sp2 is unsucceful. The system says sp2 is
installed. Why?

Right click and choose Propertities, to see if XP SP2 is indeed installed.

Also Restart in safe mode, do a disk clean up and defrag the hard disks,
then try another install. Disable any antivirus that might be running in the
background, before installing.

Switched off the Norton AV but does not help. HDD is fresh and new, plentiful
space, so think defrag not an issue. Any other suggestions? How to get to
safe mode? Maybe install from that mode?

Safe Mode install for Service Pack 2 is a good idea if other attempts
have failed. Turn the PC off. Power on, Once BIOS screen posts
press F8 every 1 second or so, when the Safe Mode menu appears
just take regular Safe Mode. If using Broadband, disconnect the
Ethernet cable before starting the install.

What update list? Right click on My computer, choose properties. Does
it indicate SP2 is installed?
