SP2 Without a Hitch

[Bob Hunt]

Well, as I have posted previously, I was reluctant to install SP2, but I
have bit the bullet and it is now installed it from the Microsoft CD. It
went very smooth, no problems. I figured the worst that could happen is
just having to reformat.
I turned off my AV, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Spysweeper, and CWShredder. This was
done after running all of them.
I did not disconnect my printer nor LogicCam. Everything is working as its
suppose too.

No problem with my installation as well. It took one hour less 3
seconds. Everything works that I have tried. So many people squawked
about problems that it scared the bejesus out of everyone. I would say
that if one follows the instructions properly there should be few if any
problems.

Mine didn't take that long. It was approx. 20 - 30 min. But, like you,
reading some of the happening on here I was really cautious about it. My
system seems to be running a little faster. It seems to have taken some of
the slugginesh(sp) out of it.

The problem is that I had to come to this forum to finally get SP2 to load
correctly. I followed Micro$oft's instructions to the T three times with no
luck. Only by coming here did I get a procedure that worked.

Although I'm still waiting for the sky to fall.

Congratulations!

I also had no issues with installation, and like you I had maintained my
system(s)properly prior to installation. I am convinced that the majority
of problems reported here are caused by two things:

1. Failure to read and follow the installation instructions.

2. Poor or non-existent system maintenance prior to installation.

I'm writing this for a non-technical friend who has Win XP Pro and SP2
installed on her ThinkPad... she brought her computer over because she
thought she had spyware... her PC slowed to a crawl. I discovered she has
SP2 installed (she 'thinks' SHE installed it) and her problems appeared at
about that time. Can the CD correct this install? I did update her ThinkPad
drivers but the system is nearly unusable because it is very slow... Spybot
Search & Destroy and Adaware list a couple of spyware items present but the
system but doesn't appear that's the problem. System Restore reports it
cannot restore before SP2.

What's the best way to uninstall SP2 or correct it?

It should be in Start/Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs. You can tell if
it's installed - go to Start/Run end enter "winver" minus the " '.

I ran winver and found that SP2 is installed. I've gone to the IBM Web site
and they have some utilities that they say should be run for Win XP SP2...
you need to to to control panel and install old versions first. Problem is
that I cannot access control panel. It won't load... What next?

I'm really glad to see some positive reports on the SP2 installation. I
hope to see more. I know I needed a lot of encouragement before I jumped
into it. Now I'm glad I did. I think the big secret, and its no secret, is
to keep your computer CLEAN. It may not matter, but I would recommend
ordering the MS CD and install from that. Downloads are risky. Too risky
to take a chance on a little something dropping out. As the old saying
goes, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Let's see some post
with success stories.
