View Full Version : Can I prevent theme from loading on startup?

Mark
December 11th 03, 08:09 AM
Hello,

I am new to WindowsXP but not new to Windows. I recently
bought a new computer and I have XP Pro on it. Last night
I was playing around with themes and I did something
wrong, I'm not sure what, but the theme that I loaded is a
black background with black text. I can see icon images,
I can click things but I cannot read them. I am able to
get into the system using the Administrator account at
which time I re-named the *.theme file that I think caused
the problem. My thinking was that when I re-booted that
theme would not be found and hopefully XP would use the
standard XP theme by default. Good idea but it didn't
work.

Does anybody know if there is a way to prevent a theme
from loading when you start windows? Or does anybody have
any other suggestions?

I am thinking as a last resort I'll re-install XP over my
current installation but I am wondering if that will mess
up currently installed drivers and apps?

Thanks in advance,
Mark

I have attached a file "Help.Theme" to this reply. Try putting it on your
dysfunctional computer and double-click it. It should automatically
reassign the theme that it contains (which, by the way, is the default
Windows XP Theme).

Write back if things go well, or if they don't.

Actually, when I opened it in Outlook Express, the Display Properties sheet
automatically popped up. This should do the same for you.

Thanks for the reply. I was able to blindly click on my
desktop and revert the theme to the XP theme. I tracked
the problem down to a theme that I downloaded. The
application background and the text were both set to
black. I know they were not that way when I installed
it. I have no idea what happened but I am back to normal
now.

thanks again.
Mark
