So I installed Windows XP Service Pack 1 over Windows
98. It has been working ok but has some problems. Could
anyone tell me how to uninstall this operating system,
completetly clear my hard drive and start over. Thanks

Hi, Katie.

There's the maybe way - and the for sure way. ;^}

IF you told WinXP Setup to preserve your old files, then you should be able
to use Add/Remove Programs to revert to the prior Windows version. (Or so
I'm told; I've never done this.)

Otherwise, there's the old faithful way: Backup your data. (Don't bother
with OS files; you'll be reinstalling those from scratch anyhow. Don't
bother with your application files; you'll need to reinstall them under
Win98 from their CDs or floppies later.) Repartition (if necessary) and
reformat. Boot from the Win98 CD-ROM and reinstall Win98. Reinstall your
applications. Restore your data.

Then you'll be back where you were a week or two ago - still a generation
behind. In my opinion, you'd be better off to spend all this time and
effort properly installing and learning to understand WinXP.

Many users who went the "upgrade" route are unhappy with WinXP. Setup tries
to migrate all your device drivers and applications to WinXP during the
upgrade. This migration is seldom 100% successful. Upgraders often wind up
with programs and hardware that work - but not quite right. As you said,
"working ok but has some problems". Also, of course, all that garbage that
had piled up on the HD over the years is still there; stuff that you had
been meaning to get rid of anyhow. Many upgraders wind up deleting
everything and doing a clean install of WinXP after a few weeks of such
frustrations.

My advice: Back up your data. Boot from the WinXP CD-ROM. Let it
repartition (if you like) and reformat the HD using NTFS. Install WinXP;
visit Windows Update as soon as you get back online to be sure you have all
the Service Packs and other needed fixes. Install all your apps under
WinXP. Restore your data. Enjoy WinXP without the burden of the Win98
legacy. ;<)

XP Home http://www.blkviper.com/Articles/OS/InstallXPHome/installxphome1.htm

There is information here on removing XP and reverting back to an earlier OS

Greetings --

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Boot from the XP installation CD, and follow the prompts.
