I just set up XP. I have a cable modem (RCA) connected
via ethernet cable. Every few seconds, the connection
between the computer and the modem just drops (I get the
message LAN Cable Unplugged - with the red "X" through the
Network Connection Icon). The cable is fine - the modem
is fine - the computer tells me the ethernet card is fine -
but for some reason, the IP addresses just disappear. My
cable company tells me that the TCP/IP settings are
correct - set to automatically identify IP address. When
we ran ipconfig/all, if you happen run it when the
connection is up, it shows IP addresses. If you run it
when the connection has dropped, no IP addresses appear
and it says "Media Disconnected" or something like that.
It's like the IP addresses appear and then just
disappear! HELP!

Sounds like faulty hardware somewhere along the line. Could be the NIC,
connection cables or the modem. Had similar happenings here right before
the DSL modem took a dive and had to be replaced.
